Spanish Numbers

Although students can easily learn the rules for building Spanish numbers by heart it can still be confusing for many of them. Numbers are formed using several words (similar to English). Some numbers may change according to the gender of the described noun.

The number "uno" (one) becomes "un" if it is written before a noun with a male gender. The same applies for all other numbers that end with an "uno". For example: un hombre (1 man), una mujer (1 woman), cuarenta y un hombres (41 men)

The number "ciento" (hundred) becomes "cien" when it is written alone prior to another word.
For example: cien hombres (100 men), cien mujeres (100 women), ciento cuarenta hombres (140 men), ciento cuarenta mujeres (140 women)

Please use the following table to learn the Spanish numbers by heart. Like in any language, the most important numbers are 0 to 20:

The numbers 20-29 are written in one word. The numbers 30-99 are formed by placing the decimal digit first (second digit from the right), then the word "y" (=and) then the unit's digit (right-most digit). When the unit's digit is zero we do not write "y cero".
