In England, a man would still open a door to a woman, but in other countries this habbit is less common. In a way, habits that existed hundred years ago slowly loose their meaning and importance.
Usually in a place with a homegenous society hatred towards foreigners can grow much more easy as a small disturbance to the homogenity may upset the entire society. People are not used to changes.
We then went out to have a drink at a bar near the hotel. There were mostly foreigners at the bar. All in all, we had the impression that there were many Westerners living in the city which gave this mix.
