Articulated prepositions are simple prepositions (de, a, su...) combined or joined with definite articles (il, la...):

These prepositions agree in gender and number with the noun they refer to.
The prepositions "con" (except "col" and "coi"), "per", "tra" and "fra" don't form an articulated preposition because they keep the article in its natural form.

To choose the right articulated preposition you just have to follow the definite articles' rule.

The articulated prepositions ending with "lo" and "la" lose the vowel and replace it with an apostrophe when preceding a noun beginning with a vowel:

• La foglia è caduta dall'albero (The leaf fell off the tree)
  
• Metto l'olio sull'insalata (I put oil on the salad)
  
• Mi sono svegliato all'alba (I woke up at dawn)
  
• La febbre dell'oro (The gold rush)
  
• Il personaggio è morto nell'episodio finale (The character died in the final episode)
